Policy for the Conferral of the Academic Degree of Faculty/Graduate School of Agriculture (Diploma Policy)

Undergraduate Course

  1. To be awarded a bachelor’s degree, a student must have been enrolled for the period specified by the faculty, and have obtained the required number of credits.
  2. As a general rule, the following requirements must be satisfied in order to graduate from the undergraduate degree program:
    1. Acquire knowledge of agricultural studies and related areas designated by each department, and understand world-class research in the social and natural sciences relating to “Life, Food, and Environment”.
    2. Conceive scientific solutions for challenges facing humanity concerning “Life, Food, and Environment” using an interdisciplinary approach.
    3. Understand the importance of agriculture, forestry and fisheries, and food-and life science-related industries, and engage in activity with the objective of contributing to the evolution of those fields with a strong sense of ethics and responsibility.
    4. Acquire the broad view necessary to address problems relating to the wide sphere of “Life, Food, and Environment”, and the ability to communicate smoothly with people of other cultures.

Graduate Course

With “life,” “food,” and “the environment” as keywords, the Graduate School of Agriculture is engaged in efforts to address a variety of issues, relating resources, energy, local communities, information, lifestyle, health, and culture, which are important global-level matters in the 21st century. The Graduate School of Agriculture is made up of seven Divisions, with each Division taking a different approach to tackling these issues, which are related to the survival of humankind, and carries out agricultural research and human resource development with the aim of contributing to improving the welfare and sustainable prosperity of humankind. The Graduate School of Agriculture is expected by society to nurture individuals who have the capacity for comprehensive, multidimensional understanding from a broad perspective as well as a high level of expertise and the ability to generate insights.
The criteria for completing the courses that will develop such individuals and granting them a Master’s or Doctoral degree are described below.

  • Master’s Course
  1. In the Master’s program, a Master’s degree is granted to a student who has attended the school for the designated number of years, received guidance for doing research, completed the required number of credits, and successfully passed the Master’s thesis review and examination conducted by the Graduate School of Agriculture.
  2. Upon completion of the Master’s program, a student is expected to have achieved the following objectives.
    (1) Attained highly expert knowledge and research techniques related to such areas as the   mechanisms of life phenomena, production and use of living organisms, conservation of the environment from a local to a global level and food issues.
    (2) A sense of mission to maintain a high level of scientific originality in their respective specialized fields, to develop epoch-making technological innovations and to propose fresh measures that facilitate sustainable development of our society.
    (3) Acquire presentation and communication skills that enable them to explain their research results to fellow researchers in their specialized fields or related research fields and to gain mutual understanding of their knowledge and findings.
    (4) Develop sufficient foreign language skill that will enable them to disseminate their research results worldwide.
  3. The review of the Master’s thesis and examination are conducted by multiple examiners, taking into consideration the abovementioned benchmarks, to determine whether the thesis under review has academic significance, novelty, creativity, and practical value, and also whether the student applying for the degree has the ability to carry forward the research and logically explain the research results, and has a broad range of specialized knowledge regarding the research field, as well as a sense of ethics and responsibility.
  • Doctoral Course
  1. In the Doctoral program, a Doctoral degree is granted to a student who has attended the school for a designated number of years, received guidance for doing research, and successfully passed the doctoral thesis review and examination conducted by the Graduate School of Agriculture.
  2. Upon completion of the Doctoral program, a student is expected to have achieved the following objectives.
    (1) An advanced sense of ethics and balance based on profound understanding of life and social phenomena to contribute to harmonious coexistence of people and nature, as well as prosperity of human.
    (2) Attained profound academic knowledge, advanced experiment techniques and analytical ability in their respective specialized fields. Based on such skills, develop original research tasks and set research questions and provide the capability to publish papers based on own research findings.
    (3) For Developed the capability to plan and to implement joint research activities with both domestic and overseas researchers, develop skills to publish papers that are highly evaluated by researchers in their specialized fields and related academic areas, and deepen communication skills to expand mutual understanding in their specialized fields.
    (4) Developed sufficient foreign language skills for taking part in international research activities, to publish their research findings in international academic journals and to be able to discuss with other researchers at international academic conferences.
  3. The review of the Doctoral thesis and examination are conducted by multiple examiners, taking into consideration the abovementioned benchmarks, to determine whether the thesis under review has academic significance, novelty, creativity, and practical value. The examiners also determine whether the student applying for the degree has the ability to plan and carry forward the research and logically explain the research results, has a broad range of specialized knowledge regarding the research field, and has high sense of ethics and a strong sense of responsibility.
